FarmDaddy Chicken Coop

This past fall, we started a new venture of raising chickens for the production of fresh, healthy, organic eggs.  Our flock is now up to 22 in number comprising 3 varieties of chickens.  We have 3 roosters,  4 Lacewing Wyandotte hens , 13 Barred Rock hens and 2 Rhode Island Red hens. We have discovered that they are very fascinating animals with distinct personalities. They even recognize our voices from afar!

Since FarmDaddy is located in a rural area, there were several coop design features that were important to us. Our coop needed to be spacious as well as a fortress for our chickens to be safe from predators such as bears, coyotes, raccoons, gators, hawks and eagles. To insure protection of our flock, we built this coop using heavy duty materials such as cattle panels, wire and hardware cloth.

We wanted our flock to have daily access to fresh pasture and sunlight.  Our coop was designed to be able to be easily moved from one spot on the pasture to another every 3-4 days. One unique feature is that it has retractable wheels.  This mobility allows our chickens to scratch and forage to their hearts desire without damaging the land. The quality of the pasture is improved by the droppings they produce.

The cedar roost boxes mounted along the back of the coop have drop doors to access eggs and aid in cleaning the nest boxes without having to enter the coop.  Our design includes an automated feeder and watering system that are accessible from outside/backside of the coop.

Our little flock enjoys pasture grass, organic chicken feed, and especially the daily gleanings from the FarmDaddy garden.
